Tiny But Mighty: Technology in Costa Rica

Tiny But Mighty: Technology in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is well-known for its beautiful beaches and laid back lifestyle, but more and more this small country is being heralded as a leader for technology in Latin America. This is largely in part to its stable political and economic climate and the government’s commitment to advancing technology services throughout the country.

Next to tourism and agriculture, technology development is one of Costa Rica’s top industries. In recent years there has been a huge influx of direct investment by some of the world’s most recognized tech companies like Microsoft, Intel, Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard and IBM, among many others. These goliaths of industry have all established call centers, research centers or manufacturing facilities in the land of Pura Vida.

Recently the World Bank named Costa Rica as the number one high-tech exporter in Latin America. There’s a number of reasons why companies are flocking to this tiny country. From a societal standpoint, Costa Rica has the highest literacy rate in Latin America (at 96.2%) and English is regularly spoken. Location-wise, Costa Rica is ideally situated with easy access to both the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean and comfortable year-around weather conditions. Additionally, Costa Rica is regarded as one of the safest countries in Latin America and incredibly stable thanks to a long-standing democratic government. When you throw in incredible tax breaks and solid free trade agreements worldwide, it’s easy to see why businesses want to be there.

However, none of this would be possible without Costa Rica’s technologically advanced infrastructure. For instance, about 90% of Costa Rica’s energy needs come from renewable sources like hydropower, wind power and geothermal plants, which provides a stable and environmentally friendly power solution.

Communication is definitely not a problem in Costa Rica either. Reliable high speed internet is fully accessible throughout the country from several different providers, so staying connected is easy. According to CINDE, Costa Rica’s international investment agency, the country currently boasts a telecommunication infrastructure that has 100% redundancy and the highest penetration of mobile devices in Latin America at 151%.

No matter what you’re looking for, from a professional web designer near the beach to a high tech manufacturing facility in the vibrant green mountains, Costa Rica has everything you could ask for: technology, sustainability, and stability.

Embrace the Pura Vida and share this!
